The Benefits of Mindfulness
Isn’t it ironic?
With all of our advanced technology and ways to connect, many of us are haunted by a pervasive feelings of disconnection and stress. The rush of daily tasks, an overload of digital stimuli and just the constant buzz of it all takes a toll. We’re left gasping for a breath of calm and clarity.
Short term solutions and quick distractions might gives a little break, but they don’t get to the heart of the matter. We’ve become accustomed to the age of immediacy, expecting quick remedies to deep-seated challenges. Meanwhile the desire for relief, fulfilment and a deeper understanding of ourselves remains.
At Aussie Meditation, we’re fans of the Unified Mindfulness founder Shinzen Young’s view that “Mindfulness is not a quick fix but a deep fix.”
The Unified Mindfulness System has a unique skills-based approach to practising Mindfulness. Learn those skills and how to practise them and you can take Mindfulness into any area of your life.
Instead of looking outwardly for validation or distraction, Mindfulness helps you access your own readily-available source of fulfillment – inside you! You’re less swayed by the ups and downs of life. Happiness and well-being become less dependent upon the external circumstances of your life. Plus, you’ll find yourself really learning to appreciate the present, pursuing your aspirations with fresh enthusiasm, and tackling hiccups with calm, creativity and focus. Sounds empowering, doesn’t it?
Mindfulness has five broad areas of benefit, all laid out in the Unified Mindfulness Happiness Grid. It’s like a roadmap to help you explore how you could use Mindfulness to enhance your happiness.
At Aussie Meditation we love working with the Happiness Grid because it helps our clients to apply Mindfulness directly to what matters most to them.
The Happiness Grid
Find Relief (Relief)
This area of the Happiness Grid covers all the ways that a person might identify they experience suffering.
Mindfulness can be a profoundly helpful way to improve your relationship to the struggles you face. People often approach Mindfulness looking to relieve some kind of suffering. The skills of Mindfulness can help to relieve suffering both directly and indirectly.
Increase Fulfilment (Fulfillment)
As you develop the attentional skills of mindfulness your level of appreciation and fulfillment from even the simplest pleasures is enriched. This section of the Grid centres around the satisfaction or comfort we feel from pleasant situations or experiences.
Understand Yourself (Insight)
Using your attentional skills to focus on your experience opens you up to insight.
This area of the Grid is about how understanding ourselves helps us to discover a sense of meaning, purpose and our place in the world.
Know yourself deeply.
Act Skillfully (Mastery)
Acting Skillfully refers to actions that might be thought of as positive or beneficial. This section of the Grid is about ways that Mindfulness can support our happiness by helping us to improve what we put into the world in terms of our behaviour or performance.
If you have ever pursued any goal then you’re familiar with the variety of ways resistance to taking action shows up. Mindfulness can helps us to work with and overcome resistance supporting us to have our positive impact in the world. Similarly Mindfulness is a great support for establishing new habits and changing old ones.
Get Connected (Connection)
As your practice deepens and you feel the culmulative effect of the benefits your empathy for everyone else naturally grows. This part of the grid is about how our desire to serve and our sense of connection to others deepens our own happiness.

Meet Mark
Hi, I’m Mark!
I live in Melbourne with my beautiful wife Rebecca and our brand new daughter, Violet.
I’ve been a musician almost my whole life and since 2000 I’ve been a conductor working at every level. I’ve experienced stress and anxiety in this role that has been debilitating. Picture me face down on a hotel bed dreading another days rehearsal. None of my training prepared me for the anxiety I experienced in the profession. My ‘push it down and keep going’ approach wasn’t really working.
Some significant trauma in childhood had given me an interest in exploring meditation. There were plenty of articles out there that said good things about it. I read some books and did some classes but admittedly often walked away a little puzzled. I ‘felt’ its potential but still wondered, “How does this really work?” Explanations often felt oversimplified (or a bit mystical) and I couldn’t see the link between what was described and the potential for a deeper level of transformation and positive change.
When I discovered the Unified Mindfulness System it changed my whole life AND it made sense! Here was an intricately designed, research-based framework distilling the essence of contemplative practices from around the globe. It provided options to work with your interests, challenges and opportunities. It was clear, precise, adaptable and effective!
The effect was so profound and the changes in my life so significant I thought ‘why isn’t everyone doing this?’ So I dove into formally studying to be a Certified Teacher of the Unified System. This took me close to 3 years and 440 hours of training.
The end result – Aussie Meditation!
